Cyber Outrage reports real cybersecurity news — real companies, real CVEs, real threat actors — and reports it accurately. Then it says the part everyone else is too polite to say out loud. The facts are journalism; the exasperation is editorial. And both come from someone who has spent his career on the defending side of the very incidents that make the headlines.
The practitioner behind the outrage
I’m Travis Nichols, a cybersecurity practitioner based on Florida’s First Coast and the founder of Bold City Cyber, a Jacksonville security firm. Before I started writing about breaches, I spent the better part of a decade preventing, hunting, and cleaning up after them — deploying the same endpoint and vulnerability-management platforms that show up in these stories, hardening the systems attackers target, and sitting through the audits most organizations dread.
That background is the entire point. When this outlet is incredulous that a critical patch sat unapplied for months, or that a payment system shipped with default credentials, it isn’t armchair commentary. It’s the reaction of someone who has done the segmentation, written the detection rules, and knows firsthand how avoidable most of it was.
A decade on the front line
I’ve spent the last ten years in the trenches of enterprise security — deploying detection systems, hunting threats, and building the kind of infrastructure that has to work when it matters. Along the way that’s meant tuning EDR/XDR platforms across environments with thousands of endpoints, running vulnerability-management programs for some of the largest companies in the world, and designing zero-trust architectures that pass audits with zero findings.
I’ve worked across the stack that keeps modern organizations secure: endpoint protection, patch automation, network segmentation, and compliance frameworks like PCI DSS, HIPAA, and GDPR. I’ve written detection logic mapped to real-world attacker behavior, hunted threats in live traffic, and built access controls designed around the assumption that trust has to be earned, not granted.
This blog is where I write about what I’ve learned doing that work. For the full career history, the LinkedIn version has the details.
Credentials & certifications
- CrowdStrike Certified Falcon Administrator
- Tanium Certified Operator 500

My core focus areas include Google Cloud Platform, containers, and network-security implementation, alongside incident response, MITRE ATT&CK–based threat hunting, and compliance across PCI DSS, HIPAA, NIST, CMMC, and GDPR. I hold a Bachelor of Applied Science in Computer Systems Networking and Telecommunications from Florida State College at Jacksonville.
The editorial standard
Every Cyber Outrage story covers a real event, sourced from primary reporting and vendor or agency advisories, with the facts held to a hard line. The jokes and the indignation are plainly my own — they ride on top of the facts and never bend them. Where something is unconfirmed, it’s labeled as alleged. The attitude is the brand; the accuracy is non-negotiable.
